According to the Aussies, the following factors decide whether a marriage works or not:
- A husband who is nine or more years older than his wife is twice as likely to get divorced, as are husbands who get married before they’re 24
- One-fifth of couples that have children before marriage separate, versus 9% of couples without children born before marriage
- Women who want children much more than their partners are more likely to get divorced
- 16% of men and women whose parents ever separated or divorced expreinced marital separation themselves, compared to 10% for those whose parents didn’t separate
- Partners who are on their second or third marriage are 90% more likely to separate than first-marriage spouses
- Couples where only one partner smokes are more likely to have relationships that end in failure
