What makes a marriage work

According to the Aussies, the following factors decide whether a marriage works or not:

  • A husband who is nine or more years older than his wife is twice as likely to get divorced, as are husbands who get married before they’re 24
  • One-fifth of couples that have children before marriage separate, versus 9% of couples without children born before marriage
  • Women who want children much more than their partners are more likely to get divorced
  • 16% of men and women whose parents ever separated or divorced expreinced marital separation themselves, compared to 10% for those whose parents didn’t separate
  • Partners who are on their second or third marriage are 90% more likely to separate than first-marriage spouses
  • Couples where only one partner smokes are more likely to have relationships that end in failure
