1/04/08 / Priceless

12:24 PM I won’t reveal the source of this. Of course it’s (probably) a joke, but still.

Once upon a time it was the Americans who were terrorists to the British. They’ve forgotten their history already.
-Traitor

The word Islam apparently means submission (also from the movie). The Quran says killing an innocent person is like taking a hundred lives, and conversely, saving an innocent life is like saving a hundred lives.

Burn After Reading

Frankly I don’t understand Coen brothers’ movies.

I just watched Burn After Reading. Like all their other movies, it seemed to have no point. It ran and ran and then just ended. There didn’t seem to be any conflict that was resolved, or any mystery solved, or any memorable characters to relate to. It was just…there. The DVD cover says “A comedic masterpiece,” but I didn’t find a single thing funny about it.

I felt the same way about No Country For Old Men, which was actually long and slow. Maybe it’s just me, because the world seems to love their movies.

Where I’ve lived

I wanted to see on a map all the places I’ve lived in so far.

12/31/08 / Eve

1:24 PM Concerning New Year’s, I can’t seem to decide whether I like things the way they are or whether I’d prefer it differently.  I’m talking about New Year’s Eve being a working day and January 1st being a holiday.  Doesn’t it seem a bit…sad to start off the new year with everything closed down?  It just doesn’t seem to convey energy and optimism.  It almost seems to say we’re lazy and tired.  Or maybe that’s just me reading too much into it.  Would I prefer having December 31st off and January 1st not?  I don’t know.  I can’t decide.

10:18 AM Poignant quote from the book I’m currently reading:

…I clung to my notion, ill defined though it was, that a serious study of any important body of human knowledge, or theory, or belief, if undertaken with a critical but not a cruel mind, would in the end yield some secret, some valuable permanent insight, into the nature of life and the true end of man.
